Turn trinkets into treasures

It looks like it’s about time to go through the attic and your grandmother’s cedar chest because antiques will be all the rage come September in Folsom. Candy Miller, one of the organizers of Antique Evaluation Day, tells me the group is in full swing to pull off a successful event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 12, at the Folsom History Museum, 823 Sutter St. Some of the appraisers used to do “Antiques Road Show” when it came through Folsom, so you know these folks are knowledgeable. While the TV show was massive, with hordes of antique-cradling, Hawaiian-shirt clad tourists waiting in long lines, Candy tells me this appraisal is quite different. “People, when they think about this (event), think of ‘Antiques Road Show’ and the mobs and mobs of people in line,” she said. “At the evaluation day, it’s very rare to stand in line. HOSPICE SEEKS HELP Snowline Hospice has kicked off its “Link-Up” campaign to benefit their children’s grief program titled “Healing Together.” The program began in January as a place where children and their families can work through their feelings after the death of a loved one. According to organizers, 31 children between the ages of 5 and 18 went through the first session. The next session begins in September and the organizers would like to help even more children if they can get the moolah. “The only thing holding us back from helping more kids is funding,” said Sue Watson, bereavement coordinator for Snowline Hospice. “If we had more funds, we could double the number of kids that we serve.” If you want to help, stop by Snowline Hospice’s administrative office in Diamond Springs (or one of their thrift stores, such as the one at 616 E. Bidwell St. in Folsom) and look for the “Link-Up Pole.” The poles are brightly colored, I’m told, so they should be easy to spot. A “link” costs $1, with each penny going directly to the program, according to organizers. The campaign will run through Sept. 20. For the children in need, the program is free.
