Try the best the region has to offer in culinary delights Sept. 7-15 during Folsom Lake Restaurant Week. More than 20 restaurants put together special meal options to give diners a treat with three-course menus priced at $19 or $29. Originally a concept by local restaurateur Richard Righton, of Bidwell Street Bistro, the plan came together with the help of the Folsom Chamber of Commerce, The Folsom Telegraph, Gold Country Media, Style Magazine and Produce Express. Daljit Sandhu, owner of India House restaurant in Folsom, said they are excited about participating in the area’s first Restaurant Week. “We are getting ready for it,” he said. “We’re looking forward to it.” Sandhu greets diners with closed folded hands, a bow and the word, “Namaste.” “It is Indian tradition to greet people,” he said with a smile. The restaurant, located at 2776 E. Bidwell St., Suite 300, in Folsom, will serve a $19 option. “It comes with a glass of wine, appetizers, salad and a chicken or vegetarian dish,” he said. “We are giving around $35 or $40 worth of food at the menu price for $19.” Sandhu said it’s the perfect way to enjoy an evening out with some great food. “Eating is the best part of life,” he said. “(Explorer) Christopher Columbus was looking for India to get spices (when) he discovered America. … Now people don’t have to risk their lives like Columbus did because India House is right here.” India House is truly a family business. His wife, Lakhwinder, does all the cooking. “She’s my better half,” he joked. His sons, Jobanjit and Jolly, can often be found working in the restaurant. “We’ve received appreciation letters from Yelp and Trip Advisor (for outstanding customer reviews) as well as winning three categories in the Telegraph’s annual Best of the Best contest and making it on the KCRA-3 A-List,” he said with pride, showing the plaques and letters. Sandhu said people should expect more from their food. “People should expect the best of the best,” he said. “People don’t have time to sit down and eat anymore and because of fast food and junk food, people are getting (unhealthy). … Food with spices and herbs are meant for us, the people. … Everything here is made from scratch. Nothing is from a box or can.” Tom Benally, a longtime employee at India House, said he takes pride in the food they serve. “Everything is freshly made,” he said. Regular customer Kimberly Glenn, of Cameron Park, said her family always enjoys the quality of food at India House. “Oh it’s wonderful,” she said. “ Mark Platt, of Land Ocean and Sienna restaurants, describes the event as, “a great thing to do in this economy.” “Restaurant week will give people a nudge to get out there and enjoy dinner, at a great value,” he said. “This is a great opportunity to really show off our restaurants, and give people a great value.” K.T. Flynn, with Gold Country Media, said that it’s easy for people to enjoy the restaurants. “Simply search the participating restaurants online and head to your favorite,” she said. There are no tickets required, Flynn said. Restaurants will include regular menus during the week, as well as fixed price menus. The event is sponsored by the Folsom Telegraph in partnership with Folsom’s Chamber of Commerce, Gold Country Media, Style Magazine and Produce Express.
