From corsets to mini-skirts, fashions from the past will take to the stage this Saturday as a fundraiser for the Folsom History Museum. Culled from a private vintage clothing collection belonging to Leslie Douglas, “Steppin’ Out: A Vintage Fashion Show” is taking place on Saturday, Oct. 11 from 1 to 3:30 p.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church located at 307 Montrose Drive in Folsom. The show will highlight evening and “sports” wear worn by ladies between 1910 and 1965, according to Folsom History Museum Director Karen Mehring. “People love to look at fashions of the day,” Mehring said. “We’re always challenged to find models to fit into the fashions.” In its fourth year, the fashion show is moving to the church because they had outgrown the museum, she said. “This year we’re moving to a different venue,” she said. “We’re using a whole different stage. The highlight is the decorations. We have a different committee for those.” While lunch won’t be served at the show, it will feature desserts, refreshments, period music and a raffle. “The show benefits our exhibits and education programs at the museum,” she said. Rhonda Barrett and Joanna Schwilk, normally in charge of cataloging textiles at the museum, are heading up the show. “We love vintage clothing,” Schwilk said. “Every year we have a vintage clothing display in conjunction with the quilt show, which just ended. So this is the culmination of that show.” Shirley Capp wore an 1895-era dress, which won’t be part of the show, for a Telegraph photo shoot as an example of near early 20th century clothing. “It took me a good hour this morning because there are 16 layers,” Capp said. “This is 18 to 20 pieces of clothing.” Her husband, Walter, said he would have asked her on a date during that time period. “Heck, she looks good in it now,” he said. Schwilk said the museum is always looking for donations or loans of vintage clothing for display. Admission to the fashion show is $25 per person and advance tickets are recommended.
