The Vista del Lago boys’ basketball team lost its third straight game Tuesday, a 62-50 decision to visiting Cosumnes Oaks.

Jake Duenkel dropped 12 points in the fourth quarter, but the Eagles’ final attempts to cut into a game-long deficit weren’t enough to stop the Wolfpack, who are unbeaten and lead the Sierra Valley Conference through eight games.

Duenkel led Vista all scorers with 22 points. He also had five rebounds and four steals.

Given how their first league game went against Cosumnes Oaks – a 75-44 Vista loss on Jan. 9 – the Eagles were improved on both ends of the court.

“We knew they’d be trying to push it so we tried to slow the game down. We started badly and fought our way back, but in the end we needed a few stops and didn’t get them,” said Duenkel.

For most of the game, Cosumnes Oaks led by about 10 points. The Eagles pulled within four points when Mehran Amin hit a three-pointer with more than five minutes to play in the fourth.

Duenkel’s 12 points were all but six points the Eagles scored in the fourth. Cosumnes Oaks stepped up its play and forced Amin out of the game on fouls, while making 9-of-13 from the foul line.

“Our defense is definitely better in the last couple games. I expect us to do really well,” Duenkel said, regarding how he thinks the team will do in its last five league games.

“I think we’re going to beat Liberty Ranch and River City, because we want to get them back,” he said.

Vista lost at Liberty Ranch by five points and at home against River City by one point.

The Eagles are currently 2-5 in the SVC, 9-13 overall. They play host to Galt Thursday.
