Joel Slak and Taylor Knoll lead a Folsom High golf team that features only seven players. Slak and Knoll are returning seniors from last year’s state tournament qualifying team, along with fellow senior Josh Sonnier, who played on the junior varsity team a year ago. Three freshmen, Jake Quackenbush, Jake Smith and Kyle Schummer round out the roster. Slak and Knoll are the team’s best players and consequently have shot the lowest scores in the team’s three tournaments thus far this season. At the Father Barry Tournament in early March, Folsom opened with a 429 in the first round of the tournament, but rebounded the next day to shoot a 417. Knoll played solid rounds of 74 and 77 to lead the way, while Slak came in with a 79 and then an 80 on day two. Quackenbush improved the most during the two-day tournament, shooting a 92 the first day and then cutting 10 strokes off his score with an 82 on the second day. “It was a good tournament for us with such a young team beginning a new season,” Folsom coach Steve Burgess said. In the first Delta River League Tournament on March 21, Folsom placed fifth with a round of 427 at Serrano Country Club. Slak had the low round for the Bulldogs with a 75, while Knoll shot a 79 and the rest of the team finished with rounds in the 90s. At the Thunder Invitational on March 28, Folsom shot a 449 at Sunset Whitney and placed 11th out of 18 teams. Slak had a great day, placing second individually with a 73, while also recording a hole-in-one on the eighth hole. The ace was also a thrill for Burgess, as it was first by one of his players during 19 years as a golf coach. Knoll came in with a 79, while the rest of the team struggled with scores in the 90s or triple digits, according to Burgess. The team’s next league tournament is Monday Cameron Park Country Club.
