Season fun while it lasted for Burton Dekoning

The 2009 football season was a roller coaster ride for Folsom High junior linebacker Burton Dekoning. It didn’t start or end the way Dekoning hoped, but it sure was fun in between. Dekoning transferred from Bella Vista over the summer, but was ruled ineligible by the Sac-Joaquin Section. Dekoning appealed and was reinstated to play in Week 4 against Franklin. From then until Folsom’s win over Granite Bay, Dekoning was a force at linebacker and played well enough to earn a spot on the Delta River League all-league team. Then after picking off a pass deep in the red zone against Granite Bay, Dekoning went to cutback and slipped and was tackled, and all his weight came down on his foot, which caused him to break his fibula, ending his season. “Definitely not the way I wanted it to end,” Dekoning said before Folsom’s game against Del Oro. “I loved this season while it lasted. It was so much fun.”
