FOLSOM, CA - The Twin Lakes Food Bank is kicking off their annual ?Give a Kid a Backpack? event to help local kids in need. The event, running through July 31, allows people to help make a difference in a local child?s life by donating new backpacks, school supplies, packages of socks or cash donations, said Tammy Thompson, Twin Lakes Food Bank executive director. ?Last year we served 748 backpacks, new socks, shoe gift cards, dental kits and a bag of kid friendly snack food,? Thompson said. ?This year we anticipate 800 or more children in need of a helping hand to start the school year out on a positive note. We are receiving many calls from families that are first time clients of the food bank inquiring about the ?Back 2 School Program.?? Thompson said families interested have said they don?t have the funds to get their children ready for the new school year, many citing job loss and cutbacks in hours. ?I believe this program is a huge relief to the children, along with the parents,? Thompson said. Folsom drop off locations through July 31, are Peet?s Coffee, 1290 E. Bidwell St.; Premier West Bank, 701 East Bidwell St. and Twin Lakes Food Bank, 327 Montrose Drive from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.  For more information, visit their website at Reach Laura Newell at
