Sac-Joaquin Section realignment proposal would move Vista to Capital Athletic LeagueBy: Matt Long, Sports Editor
A proposal by the Sac-Joaquin Section to realign the section’s leagues and conferences has an impact on Vista del Lago.
In the proposal released last week, the Eagles would be moved from the Sierra Valley Conference to the Capital Athletic League, where Vista sports teams would face a whole different slate of opponents including Casa Roble, Christian Brothers, El Camino, Oakmont, Placer and Sacramento. The realignment would also place Vista del Lago in Division III instead of Division IV. If the proposal is approved, the move to the Capital Athletic League would begin in the fall of next year.
Vista del Lago Athletic Director Mark Keeton said he needs to research the possible move before making a final opinion about it.
“I have to look into it more, but I know the section tries to make realignment equitable to all involved based on the size of the school and what they offer,” Keeton said. “I just want to be sure all those schools offer the same sports that we do. I want it to be equitable for everyone across the board.”
Keeton acknowledged that perhaps the Eagles were getting too big for the SVC, where they were facing schools such as Galt and Union Mine that were much smaller in size.
Vista football coach Chris Jones welcomes the move, not just for the football program, but for all sports.
“I think it’s a good plan and makes sense,” Jones said. “Where we currently fit in the SVC, I think we’re growing out of that and there are schools there that are going in different directions. The schools (in the proposed realignment) have a lot of similarities with us. I think it would be neat to have Casa Roble, who is close by, in our league.
“The section office does a great job and puts a lot of time in these proposals and I think it makes a lot of sense.”
