Seven teams totaling about 100 wrestlers attended the Folsom Wrestling Team Camp held June 29-30 at Folsom High. Wrestling coach Mike Collier brought in several top-notch wrestling clinicians to teach and train, including former Folsom wrestlers Shawn Michalek and Mauricio Wright. Michalek is a graduate of Embry Riddle and a two-time NAIA national qualifier, while Wright is a two-time national champion and four-time Division II All-American. Other clinicians included Ati Connor, an All-American from Nebraska, David Mendoza, a NCAA qualifier from Old Dominion and Lance Palmer, an All-American from Ohio State. Collier had about two dozen Folsom High kids at the camp, while Vista del Lago also fielded a team, as did Granite Bay, Del Campo, Del Oro, Liberty and Calaveras. Two schools from Southern California attended the camp and there was also a team from Las Vegas. After drilling in lots of technique, the teams squared off for dual meets at the end of each day of the two-day camp. ?For our guys, I show them stuff all the time so this is a good way to learn different styles from different coaches,? Collier said. ?They?re probably tired of hearing my voice. In the offseason we want our guys to get as much mat time and matches as they can so this is a good way for them to get that. ?For the camp as a whole,? Collier continued, ?it?s doubled in size from last year so we?d like it to keep growing every year and I like the fact that we had a few schools from outside the area like Southern California and Las Vegas.?
