Real estate pros turn dirt to create farm

El Dorado Hills Natural Farms is now open for business and the farmers want to invite the community out to enjoy the harvest.

Located off Highway 50 at Bass Lake Road, El Dorado Hills Natural Farms is the only chicken, fruit and vegetable farm on the western slope of El Dorado County.

“We’re very excited to be bringing farm fresh eggs and nutritious agricultural products to your kitchen table,” said farmer Doug Hus. “We are your local El Dorado Hills farm and we want to help people eat fresh and healthy.”

Hus, a broker with Capital Valley Realty Group in El Dorado Hills, started the farm with his co-worker, Realtor Rob Day, and Day’s wife Robin. The three, all longtime El Dorado Hills residents, took the past year to prepare the land for the farm. The farm has been selling produce for two months.

“This had been unproductive land,” said Hus. “So we wanted to make it productive and move forward with the Farm-to-Fork movement.”

The Farm-to-Fork movement in Sacramento began from one restaurateur’s idea a few years ago and is now being promoted by chefs, farmers, business leaders and elected officials of the Sacramento region.

“People really do want to know where their food is coming from and what has been sprayed on it,” said Hus.

The 10-acre farm was originally a large dairy farm in the early-to-mid 1900s.

Day said they follow all-natural pest and weed control methods to provide the most nutritious pesticide-free products available. They feature more than 40 types of fruits, vegetables, herbs and berries along with raising free-range chickens for farm-fresh eggs.

While the farm has only been open for business for a couple months, the farmers said they have big plans. They plan to use the space for harvest festivals and other events to promote healthy eating and farm fresh products. They also want to bring students in from local schools to help educate about eating farm fresh produce.

“Rob and I have three kids who grew up in this school district,” Robin said. “So we want to give back to our community and help educate the next generation of students. This is our way of giving back to our community.”

Hus also has two teenage daughters who are interested in participating with the farm.

“We have all learned so much already about fresh farm eating,” Robin said. “We have all not only lost weight and gained more energy from our change in diet, but we also better understand why it’s important to eat fresh produce directly from the farm. Now we want to help educate our community about eating fresh.”
Day said their farm has also established a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program.

Their CSA program is unique in that they don’t prepare ready-made baskets of produce items customers may not want. Instead they give customers weekly vouchers to stop by their farm stand during open hours and personally hand-select produce. Each CSA member is provided weekly vouchers based on the quarter or season purchased.

“Our fruits and vegetable products will change seasonally but you can be assured that there will be a wide variety of items from which to choose,” said Hus. “The harvest calendar online will give you an idea of what may be available at our farm stand.”
