EL DORADO HILLS, CA - The pirates return to El Dorado Hills for the libraries annual Pirates Festival this weekend. The 80-foot Dauntless pirate ship has set her sails for library for the “Pirates at the Library Festival” from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 18, at 7455 Silva Valley Park, El Dorado Hills. Stepping back 300 years ago, the pirate crew will demonstrate firing cannons, mending the wounded, guarding the brig’s prisoners and navigating the high seas. Families can also step aboard the ship to hear the stories of the sea, listen to the music, play games and face painting. Capt. Maclaren, the Dauntless Ship captain, played by Tom Riggins of Wilton, will bring kids aboard the ship for history lessons and pirate activities. “The ship is very hands on, so kids have the chance to turn their imaginations on and step back to the 1700s to see the golden age of sails,” Riggins said. “We will have cannon fire, sword fighting and everything else you would expect to see on a pirate ship.” This year Capt. Jack Spare Ribs, a Capt. Jack Sparrow look-a-like, will also return to the festival to perform at the event. “He is outstanding and a hit with all ages,” said Carolyn Brooks, El Dorado Hills library branch manager. He will perform two shows, at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., at the outdoor stage. The event will also include live Celtic music at 10 a.m., noon and 3 p.m. by The Blarney Band. “This is a great day to spend with the family, have some fun and learn some history about pirates,” Brooks said. “Make sure to bring your gold, because we have unique gifts and food for sale.” The event brought in 3,500 people last year, and Brooks said she expects it to be another fun year. The annual fundraiser helps support events hosted at the library. Children and parents are encouraged to wear pirate costumes. A $1 donation is suggested for entry.
