FOLSOM, CA - With the switch to the spread offense a year ago, Vista del Lago featured an explosive offense led by quarterback Aaron Young and receiver Logan Smith. Both players have graduated and Vista enters the season with senior Justin Moore at quarterback with a young protégé, sophomore Matt Jimison, waiting in the wings. It will be tough to top Young’s numbers (3,547 yards passing, 30 TDs), but Young entered last year with no varsity experience and yet had an outstanding season. Moore is hoping to do the same and if given the chance, so is Jimison. Moore played behind Young a year ago and saw very limited playing time, but is ready to take his turn behind center. “My biggest strength is leadership and bringing the team together so we are successful,” Moore said. “I think I’ve got good athletic ability and I can pull it down and run the ball if I have to make a play. I’m also tough and will take a hit to make a play.” Moore has had a busy offseason, as he’s worked hard to not only prepare for the opportunity to be the starting quarterback, but also to improve his athletic ability. He’s put on 20 pounds of muscle since last year and has lowered his 40 time by two-tenths of a second. He’s worked with his quarterback coach to improve his throwing mechanics and has also tirelessly thrown to his receivers. While last year was frustrating because he wasn’t on the field much, Moore said he learned a lot from watching and working with Young. “I got a ton out of last year even though I wasn’t playing,” Moore said. “I learned a lot from Aaron, especially by watching film with him. He did a great job and has given me great advice. He told me to get out there and have fun playing with my teammates.” Jimison, who shared the starting role at quarterback on Folsom High’s undefeated freshman team a year ago, is also eager to get a shot behind center. “I think I bring good decision making to the position and I can get the ball into the hands of my receivers,” Jimison said. “I take pride in the fact that I can move my feet and am a good runner too.” Jimison got his feet wet at Vista’s team camp and was happy with his performance. “I thought I had a great performance and did really well at the camp,” Jimison said. “It helped me a lot getting used to the speed of the varsity game.” Vista del Lago head coach Chris Jones, obviously, likes both quarterbacks and said Moore is the likely starter week one against Oak Ridge. “Justin is the older of the two and has had a great spring and summer,” Jones said. “Justin was able to watch and learn from Aaron last year and even though he didn’t get many snaps, he’s got a good command of what we’re doing. “Matt is obviously young, but has a really good upside and needs time and experience,” Jones continued. “He’s going to be on our varsity roster and we’ll have the opportunity to spend time coaching him and get him repetitions. He will be a very good quarterback. He’s done a good job thus far and when he’s struggled it’s been because of his inexperience.” Jones said both players have worked hard to improve and have a good command of the offense. The key to their success will be getting used to the varsity level. “There’s nothing like that game experience and Justin has about 25 snaps of it and Matt doesn’t have any at the varsity level,” Jones said. “They’re both going to show some nerves, but both are mature enough to settle down and handle it.” Whoever is behind center, they know they’ve got some talented teammates to play with. “I have high expectations for the offense,” Moore said. “Our offensive line did a great job at camp and our receivers are fantastic and can all make the big play. Our running back does a great job coming out of the back field. I think we’re going to explode again offensively this year.” Jimison added, “I love the spread offense and we’ve got a great group of receivers and Josh (Pfeffer) is really good out of the backfield. I definitely think we’re going to have an explosive offense this year.” ----- VISTA DEL LAGO OPENER When: 7:15 p.m. Friday, Aug. 24 Vs: Oak?Ridge
