Vista del Lago sophomore Marissa Mendez capped off her fabulous sophomore cross country season by placing 35th at the state meet at Woodward Park in Fresno on Saturday. Mendez completed the five-kilometer run in 19 minutes, 42 seconds, a personal-best time at that distance. That made Mendez a happy camper. “It went pretty well,” Mendez said. “I placed 35th out of 197 runners in the Division IV race and ran my personal-best time so I’m pretty happy. If I could change anything, maybe I should have gone out a little faster.” Mendez was the 12th sophomore to finish, which perhaps more accurately defines how well she ran. Her performance this season paints a bright running future for her over her next two years of high school. “It was a good experience for me,” Mendez said. “It was my first time running on the course and I understand it better.” Mendez plans to run on a relay team at Sunday’s California International Marathon and then do some running with the Buffalo Babes Running Club before resting a bit prior to the track and field season.
