"The Marvelous Wonderettes" brings girl power to Folsom stage

-A +A
FOLSOM, CA - Remember the early 1960s? Folk music was on the wane, Elvis was in the Army, and the British Invasion had not yet arrived. Girl vocal groups dominated the pop charts led by Phil Specter and his Wall of Sound, The Shirelles, The Shangrilas and The Ronnettes were all popping out hit after hit. Songs like Heat Wave, Dancin? in the Street and Wedding Chapel kept feet moving. ?The Marvelous Wonderettes? is a musical comedy based on a fictional girl group from that era. Written by Roger Bean in the musical theatre genre of ?Jersey Boys? and ?Forever Plaid,? the show features a hot score of tunes from the early ?60s era. Featuring a cast of four (Jessica Nanoff, Jessica Larrick, Arjana Sanfilippo, Kayla Lardner) with John Wilder on piano (?Evil Dead: The Musical,? ?Tom Foolery? and ?Nunsense?). John has actually performed with many groups whose songs the Wonderettes perform. The play is directed by Warren Harrison, who just finished directing the critically acclaimed and extremely popular comedy ?Leading Ladies? at the Sutter Street Theatre. ?The Marvelous Wonderettes? is the third production in Sutter Street Theatre?s Director?s Series. It opens Thursday, July 19 with a reception with the cast and director immediately following the performance. ?The Marvelous Wonderettes? continues 7 p.m. on Thursdays and Sundays and 4 p.m. Saturdays at 4 p.m. through Aug. 26.
