Marlins placed 12th at Far Westerns ChampionshipsBy: Staff Report
The Sierra Marlins placed 12th in the Far Westerns Age Group Championships held April 4-7 in Morgan Hill.
More than 1,800 swimmers from 180 teams from as far away as Vancouver, BC, competed in the four-day long event. Preliminary heats are held in the morning with the top-10 swimmers in each event invited back to swim again that night.
The Marlins took 27 athletes between the ages of 10 and 15 and had their best showing at Far Westerns in recent history, boasting more finalists and more event winners than ever before.
Team best performances include:
Bryce Mefford - 14, had the team’s best performance in the meet high-point competition placing fourth in the 13-14 boys age group. Mefford’s best performance was in his 1,000 yard free, winning the event outright among all ages at the meet. Mefford also qualified to compete in six events at the prestigious Western Zone Sectional Championship meet in Santa Clarita in August.
Halladay Kinsey - 12, was the girls’ top performer for the Marlins, placing sixth in the meet high-point competition. Kinsey took first in both the 200-yard breast stroke and the 50-yard breast stroke.
Heaven Quintana - 14, won both the 200 butterfly and 400 individual medley on the final day of competition. Quintana was also seventh in the meet high-point competition for 13-14 girls.
Other finalists include: Nico Dolley, 12, Liam O’Haimhirgin, 14, Ethan Dillard, 14, Chloe Miller, 14 and Jennifer Lathrop, 14.
