Bringing the Mark Stanfield Alumni Indoor Coed Soccer Tournament indoors to the Folsom Sports Complex turned out to be a good move.

The Folsom Soccer Club alumni event held Dec. 30 in the name of Stanfield, a former coach in the club who passed away in April 2011, was a big success. About 90 alumni from 18 years old to players in their mid-20s showed up to play in the day-long tournament. It was the first time in three years that the tournament was held indoors.

“Being indoors we didn’t have to worry about the weather, but the best thing about it was that everyone hung around there all day and people saw more of their friends,” said Dean Williams, one of four organizers of the tournament along with Dave Cox, Jim Lehman and Michael Raffetto. “There was great communication between everyone and it was nice for the parents to come and watch, who were not only warm, but also got to see everyone.”

The eight teams were divided into two brackets and all teams were named after Santa’s reindeer. Each team had both male and female players and each played three games.

“Everyone had a great time,” Williams said. “Our goal is to have an alumni game for the Folsom Soccer Club, but also to raise money for the memorial part of it. Eventually, the money raised will be used to do something for the club in the name of those players or coaches who have passed away.”
