A 33-year-old Roseville man was shot and killed by a Placer County Sheriff’s deputy in a Granite Bay parking lot Monday evening. Robert Sean Clifford was reportedly sitting in his vehicle in the parking lot of a Walgreens store on Douglas Boulevard, near Cavitt Stallman Road. The deputy, a 15-year veteran of the Placer County Sheriff’s Office, was investigating the car as it was parked toward the back of the drug store shortly after 10:30 p.m., according to Placer County Sheriff’s Lt. Mark Reed. The Walgreens store had just closed for the evening but employees were still inside. “As soon as he contacted him, the guy was uncooperative, unlike a normal person that you would contact,” Reed said. According to a statement from the Placer County Sheriff’s Office, the deputy saw a handgun on the front seat of the car, held Clifford at gunpoint and called for backup. Clifford repeatedly refused to cooperate with the deputy and reached for the handgun on the seat, according to the statement, and the deputy fired his weapon, hitting Clifford, who later died at a Roseville hospital. Reed said Sheriff’s deputies don’t know why Clifford was sitting in the parking lot with a handgun and the incident is under investigation. “I can’t speculate until we do a complete investigation,” Reed said. As is standard procedure with an officer-involved shooting, the deputy involved is on paid administrative while the investigation continues. ~ Toby Lewis
