Maria Malone kept the legacy going, as she qualified for the state meet in the 3,200-meter run. For Folsom High, it’s the 11th consecutive year that a two-miler has qualified for the state meet. Malone, a junior, did so by placing second at Friday’s Masters Meet at Hughes Stadium at Sacramento City College. Malone ran a personal-best time of 10 minutes, 38.96 seconds. “I’m happy with how I ran and I did well, but I didn’t have anyone around to push me and I probably could have gone faster if someone was there,” Malone said. “I’ve been waiting to break 10:35, but I don’t know if it’s going to happen.” Laurynne Chetelat of Davis won the race by 33 seconds, while Malone finished 34 seconds in front of third-place finisher Jordan Burke of Placer High. Malone’s goal for the state meet is a top-10 finish and to break 10:35. Last year she placed 17th in 11:00.05. Malone is Folsom High’s only state qualifier, but several others placed at the meet. Gianni Vernon-Reynolds made the finals in the 100 meters, qualifying with an 11.38 and finishing fifth overall in 10.86, setting a school record in the process. “Straight out of the box I felt fast and it went well,” Vernon-Reynolds said. “I finally broke the school record, which was one of my goals this year.” Vernon-Reynolds ended up 14th in the triple jump with a leap of 43 feet, 9 inches. He and Pat Cruse, Steve Roy and Clayton Daly ran a 3:32 to place 21st in the 4x400-meter relay. Mike Starr fell a foot short of qualifying for the state meeting, finishing sixth in the pole vault at 13 feet, 10 inches, well short of his personal best of 15 feet. Starr cleared 13'10" on his third and final attempt, but missed all three attempts at 14'4". "I just couldn't pull it off," Starr said. "It was a bad day with a strong head wind. Half of my vaults I couldn't get up on my pole and the other half I'd go through it. "I've vaulted in windy conditions before, but I haven't had enough practice in those conditions. There should have been five guys from the meet to reach 14'10" and qualify but there were only three. It was a bad day for everyone." Morgan Pugh placed third in her 800-meter heat, running a personal-best 2:20.98 despite windy conditions. Pugh ran in fifth for most of the race, before moving up to place third. In the finals Pugh took one more second off her best time and ran a 2:19.52 to place sixth. Pugh also placed ninth in the 1,600 meters in 5:18.06. Rachel Roots placed fifth in the long jump, leaping 17 feet, while teammate Lani Fontillas finished 12th in 16'2". Alex White finished 13th in the 100-meter hurdles in 17.22, while Courtney Anderson and Sarah Hockensmith had 20th-place finishes. Anderson ran a 49.74 in the 300 hurdles, while Hockensmith pole vaulted 9'3". Daly was Folsom's only other male qualifier, as he placed 20th in the 1,600 meters in 4:33.74.
