Local students take awards

Commander Mike Slater, of Folsom’s Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6604, and Carol Murphy, president of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, recently presented scholarship awards to this year’s winners of the “Voice of Democracy” and “Patriot’s Pen” competitions. Diksha Mohapatra, a senior at Folsom High School, took first place and was awarded $500. Raymond Mullen, a senior at Rio Americano High, took second and $300. In third place was Katelyn Burson, a junior at Vista del Lago High School in Folsom. She was awarded $100. Chetan Giduturi, a sixth-grader at Folsom Middle School, won the Patriot’s Pen award and $150. Each student also received a certificate of merit, a patriotic pin and a wallet-sized card acknowledging their participation. According to Corky Guenter, the Voice of Democracy program is open to high school students. Middle school students may participate in the Patriot’s Pen. ~ Staff report
