Kurtz, Borst, Ankhelyi up for week's top athlete

-A +A

After a little updating glitch, our Athlete of the Week feature returned this week at Placer  Sports, our regional all-sports Web site.

Three new candidates have been chosen from the high schools throughout the Gold Country Media footprint – covering Placer County as well as the communities of Folsom and El Dorado Hills.

Voting will run from Monday through Sunday each week. Log on each week to check out the new nominees and cast your vote.

The new poll includes a pair of basketball players who are just starting their seasons along with a young runner whose season is now complete.

Whitney High senior Cody Borst has led the Wildcats in scoring in the early going this season. The 6-foot-2 guard is averaging 19 points per game on a new-look Whitney team that carries no player taller than 6-3.

Madeleine Ankhelyi, a freshman, placed 10th in the Division III race at the recent state cross country championships. Ankhelyi finished with a personal-best time of 18 minutes, 21 seconds and was the first freshman to cross the finish line. She helped lead the Eagles to a 13th-place finish overall.

Mike Kurtz is averaging a double-double for Woodcreek through his team’s first 10 games of the season. The 6-foot-11 senior center has played a huge role in the Timberwolves’ 10-0 start by scoring better than 12 points per game, grabbing more than 10 boards per contest and blocking more than three shots each night.
