Hey, get a job: Career coaching classes on the way

A Word to the Wise

For several months I have been attending Career Coaching classes at Bayside Church in Roseville on Sunday nights. It is headed by a kind gentleman named Dan Lott and for me it has been a definite blessing. Dan and the others who help in this endeavor have a heart for people. They want to see folks succeed in their career transitions. In addition, they have a “big tent” Web page on which they post regular communications. Finally, they help the participants get established with a LinkedIn account. Without this program, I would have been drifting aimlessly in the job and career search. Michael Dugan has also been attending the sessions, but for another reason as well. He is leading the same program in our area beginning on June 29. The sessions will be held at Green Valley Community Church, 3500 Missouri Flat Road in Placerville. They will be held every Monday for eight weeks. There is a nominal fee of $25 that covers all of the cost for binders, materials, handouts and online testing. They also have support from the Cameron Park Rotary and the Rotary of El Dorado Hills. If you have left a job, been laid off or are currently unsatisfied with your job, or a retiree who needs to make extra income, these meetings are for you. Also, recent high school or college graduates will find them extremely helpful in their job search and career planning. The eight sessions will cover topics that include the impact of job loss on you and your family, interviewing skills, resume writing, networking tips, developing a personal marketing plan and, one of my favorites, creating your 30-second “elevator speech.” This is the speech where you sell yourself if you had 30 seconds in an elevator with a prospective employer. What would you say to most effectively market your skills? The classes start at 6 p.m. and last for two hours. Again, they begin June 29 and go through Aug. 17. For more information please contact Cindi Erhgott at (530) 622-3231. Cindi is the Life Skills Director at Green Valley Community Church. You may also contact the course instructor, Mike Dugan, at 873-7860. He would be happy to answer any of your questions. It is so exciting to see programs like this offered in our community to help us bounce back, grow and thrive together. Speaking as a current participant, I encourage you to check it out.
