Troy Grossi and Ney Vencer led Vista del Lago’s wrestling team at the Tim Brown Memorial Tournament held in Sacramento over the weekend.
Grossi won six of his eight matches to finished eighth at 145 pounds, a weight class which featured 10 of the top-40 ranked wrestlers in the state at that weight.
Grossi opened with a pin over Foothill’s Kenny Williams before losing to El Dorado’s John Kunkle, 5-4. In the consolation bracket, Grossi reeled off five straight, hard-fought decisions before dropping his final bout to Angel Beltran of Granada High, 3-2.
Grossi defeated Tokay’s Mario Mendieta, 10-5, Merced’s Romeo Ontiveros, 2-1, Sutter’s Chase Miles, 6-2, Lodi’s Dustin Sefried, 3-2 and Bret Harte’s Giovanni Morillo, 9-4.
The win over Sefried, ranked seventh in the state, avenged a loss Sefried gave Grossi the previous week.
Vencer, wrestling at 132 pounds, won three of his five matches to place in the top-16 of his weight class. Vencer started the tournament with a pin of Royce Ramirez from Will C. Wood and then defeated Matthew Miller from Woodcreek.
In the next round, Vencer lost to the eventual champion, Emilio Saaveda of Modesto, 15-0, before pinning Placer’s Gamaliel Gomez in the consolation bracket. He then lost his final match by pin to De La Salle’s Westley Hart.
Vista finished 39th out of 98 teams participating in the tournament.
