Troy Grossi and Ben Johnson will represent Vista del Lago’s wrestling team at the Masters Tournament to be held in Stockton Thursday and Friday. Grossi, a junior, took second in the 138-pound weight class at the Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV Tournament over the weekend, while Johnson, a freshman, placed fourth at 145 pounds. The top-five finishers in each weight class advanced. The Eagles had three others place sixth and just missed qualifying, including juniors Austin Rompel (106) and Jacob Sahagun (152) and senior Connor Moore (170). Grossi only had to win one match during the tournament to place second. He opened with a second-period pin over Sonora’s Austin Ramirez in 2:55 and then had a forfeit victory of El Dorado’s Kyle Ferguson to reach the finals. Oakdale’s Tyler Noon beat him there in a close match, 3-0. Johnson won his first two matches, earning a 15-0 technical fall win over Ruben Rocha of Pacheco and then defeated Sierra’s Lucas Widmer, 10-7. Johnson then lost 9-3 to the eventual champion, Central Catholic’s Ray Lomas, and was forced down to the consolation bracket. He won his first match over Los Banos’ Noah Camacho, 10-2, before losing to Oakdale’s Tyler Malone, 7-4, and to place fourth. As a team the Eagles placed ninth with 79.5 points. Oakdale won the tournament with 270.5 points.
