Vista del Lago’s Troy Grossi and Ben Johnson picked up one win at the Sac-Joaquin Section Masters Wrestling Tournament before being eliminated. Grossi, wrestling at 138 pounds, opened the tournament with a 4-2 loss to Folsom’s Mason Koshiyama. He then defeated Bear River’s Dallen Stone 11-3 before losing to Woodcreek’s Austin Mason. At 145 pounds, Johnson lost to Elk Grove’s Braden Henderson by technical fall, 15-0, before rebounding to pin Woodcreek’s Michael Contini. He was then eliminated by Escalon’s Jason Robbins. “The results are not what we wanted as these kids had their eyes set on being Vista’s first state qualifier,” Vista wrestling coach Frank Richmond said. “However, we can’t be disappointed with their effort. Both kids work harder than anyone I’ve ever coached and were always working diligently toward their goals. Both of them will be right back on the mat within a week to start working toward getting to Masters next year. That’s the kind of kids they are. With a little more experience and mat time, they will reach that goal of state. I look forward to seeing what they will do next year.” The previous week, Grossi made it to the finals of the divisional tournament and took second to Oakdale’s Tyler Noon. Johnson became Vista’s first freshman to qualify for the Masters Tournament by placing fourth at divisionals, losing only to the eventual champion, Ray Lomas of Central Catholic, and third-place finisher Tyler Malone of Oakdale.
