The American River Futbol Club under-13 girls’ soccer team, Freedom '98, placed second at the Zephyr Cup Tournament in Reno June 26-27. The tournament was a near perfect shutout for the team with only one goal scored on them in five games. The club won their first game 2-0 against Nevada’s Elite '98 and then won 7-0 and 4-0 games to reach the semi-finals. The club tied Santa Rosa United 0-0 in the semis but advanced to the finals on penalty kicks. In the finals against Diablo FC, the Freedom allowed a goal in the final 30 seconds of overtime and lost 1-0. Freedom '98 played an aggressive technical tournament and displayed tremendous teamwork. Members of the team include Riley West, Hanna Lewandowski, Erika Rice, Megan Gisin, Laurel Pyle, Natalie Cowlishaw, Kendall Derry, Ella Treiterer, Peyton Garvey, Sarah Kelly, Shannon Fuchs, Kaitlin Derry, Britney Johnson, Paige Garvey and Alexa Gisin. American River Futbol Club is the Division 1 competitive soccer program for the American River Youth Soccer League and is in its second year.
