Folsom High junior Isaias Diaz is a state wrestling champion. Diaz won the state championship in Greco-Roman Wrestling in the 152-pound weight class in the Cadet division (15-16 year olds) on May 22. In doing so, Diaz has qualified for the national championship tournament to be held in Fargo, ND in July. Diaz dominated the competition at the state tournament, winning all four of his matches by pin, while only allowing his opponents two points. “To my knowledge, Isaias is Folsom High’s first Greco-Roman state champion in the Cadet division,” Folsom wrestling coach Mike Collier said. “Isaias led the way for the Mad Dawg Wrestling Club, as we had our best finish at this event in our club’s history, as all 10 athletes competing earned medals.” Connor Pollock also had a fine showing, as he placed third at 119 pounds, winning his final match by technical fall. Quinton Skondras placed fourth at 135 pounds, while Roger Berton ended up seventh at 135 pounds in the Junior division (17-18 year olds). In the lower age levels, all six Mad Dawg wrestlers came home with medals. Nicholas Fiegener placed second at 120 pounds in the schoolboy (13-14 year olds). Alex Skondras and Jason Bergquist placed third, while Dalton Boyer was fifth (Schoolboy, 77) and Kyle Parrot (Schoolboy, 120) and Jeff Skyrud (Novice, 90) finished seventh in their divisions. “It was an excellent weekend and all have qualified for either regionals or nationals,” Collier said. “Diaz and Pollock will be joined at Nationals by teammate Tianna Camous, who previous qualified by placing second at the girls’ freestyle state championships. The nationals experience will be tremendous for all three, but it’s not cheap, as it will cost more than $1,000 per athletes to attend.” Anyone wishing to help sponsor these athletes can contact Mike Collier at 530-867-1910 or stop by a Mad Dawg practice from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Folsom High wrestling room.
