Back-to-back for the ‘Cats The Folsom Wildcats under-12 girls’ soccer team finished an incredible season by earning the 2009 California Youth Soccer Association (CYSA) – Association Cup. The team also won the 2008 Association Cup, making them one of the few teams to win it in back-to-back seasons. Their season included the best record in the Metro League, with eight wins, a pair of ties and no losses in the top division, and an overall record of 41-3-1. Along the way, Folsom won the Folsom Lake Cup Classic, Santa Clara Rotary Cup, Pleasanton Soccer City Warm-Up, ARYSL Goal Rush, Almaden Halloween Classic and Cassy Rowe Benefit tournaments. A second-place finish was earned in the Challenge Cup division of District Cup. Wildcat defenders Danielle DaCosta, Delaney Hooper, Serena Ramos and Savannah Schultz worked well together deterring opponents from getting many quality shots on goalkeeper, Nicole Bartel who allowed only 16 goals in 45 games. Mid-fielders Allison Magon, Mary Meyer, Kerilynn Reinbolt, Lauren Mentzer, Lauren Kuntz, Cailey Colombo and Sarah Huber worked balls through the midfield and assisted the team’s defenders. Forwards Jessica Maglietta, Kendall Calderara, Carly Morgan and Makena Totushek took shots and finished passes and rebounds into opponents’ goals. Association Cup is CYSA’s season finale tournament for select soccer teams that takes place over multiple weekends annually. In Fremont, the Wildcats won their bracket in round robin play, allowing them to advance to the “Sweet 16 round.” They out ran the Santa Rosa Puma’s 4-0, blew over the Mustang Tornadoes 2-1 and then beat last year’s cup runner-up, SASC Extreme 3-0. In Morgan Hill the following weekend, Folsom extinguished the Petaluma Fireballs 6-0 and contained sister Folsom team, the Arsenal, 1-0, seven minutes into overtime to advance to the Final Four. In Danville January 24, the Wildcats calmed the Fair Oaks Storm 3-0 and then dominated most of the championship match, winning 2-0 against a spirited Mustang Dynamite team. While rarely allowing the Dynamite to set up an offensive attack and keeping pressure on their opponents, Calderara scored on the rebound of Schultz’ free kick from 18 yards, 44 minutes into the 60-minute game. Folsom scored an insurance goal five minutes later when Totushek finished a pass from Hooper into the bottom left corner of the Mustang goal from about five yards out. Wildcat head coach Derek Reinbolt and assistant coaches Stacey Schultz and Tony Maglietta are proud of the team’s development and success this season. Great teamwork and individual play developed during the regular season, tournaments and the team’s peak play in January culminated in their second Association Cup in as many years. Three other Folsom Select Soccer Club teams advanced to Association Cup championship matches. The under-11 boys, Wave, coached by Michal Hodgedon lost a close match 17 minutes into overtime 1-0 to the Rocklin Rage. The under-11 girls, Attack, coached by John Crostic, lost a heart breaker 1-0 in overtime after dominating most of the match against the Mustang Extreme. Finally, the under-14 girls Mustangs, coached by Brian Pasut beat the Sunrise Tornadoes 3-0 after losing a close championship match in 2008. It’s was a great showing by Folsom Soccer Club in Association Cup play thus far, with several strong under-16 and under-19 Folsom teams beginning their tournaments in mid-March.
