Folsom High winning the Division II section football championship was bittersweet for basketball coach Mike Wall.

It was good for the football program, the players and the school, but for Wall, it’s at least another week without nearly 40 percent of his team, many of whom figure to be key players.

Folsom and Vista del Lago host the Folsom-Vista Basketball Invitational starting Thursday and going through Saturday when the championship game is slated to be played at 7:30 p.m. at Folsom High. In a perfect world, the Bulldogs and Eagles would meet to determine the tournament’s winner before a big crowd.

However, Folsom enters the tournament without five key players off its 13-man roster who are currently playing football including Josiah Deguara, Lukas Hendricks, Cody Creason, Parker Boone and Harry Lipnosky. It’s also a certainty that if the Bulldogs make the championship game, the team will lose some fans who will be watching the football team battle De La Salle for the Nor-Cal Open championship at Sac State.

This is the second year of the teams hosting the tournament, the junior varsity and varsity teams playing on their respective home courts Thursday night (5:30 and 7:30 p.m., respectively), while the varsity teams will play at Folsom High on Friday and Saturday. The JV and freshman tournaments wrap up at Vista del Lago Friday and Saturday, except for the junior varsity championship game , which will be played at 6 p.m. at Folsom High Saturday right before the varsity title game.

The tournament features several quality teams. Folsom opens with El Dorado at 7 p.m. Thursday followed by Rocklin against American High School at 8:30 p.m. Vista opens at home against Del Campo at 7 p.m. with Center playing Woodcreek at 8:30 p.m.

The winners of the Folsom/El Dorado and Rocklin/American games play at 7 p.m. Friday at Folsom High with the winners of the Vista/Del Campo and Center/Woodcreek games playing afterward at 8:30 p.m. The losers of the Vista/Del Campo and Center/Woodcreek games play at 4 p.m. Friday, while the Folsom/El Dorado and Rocklin/American losers play at 5:30 p.m.

On Saturday play begins at Folsom High at 1:30 p.m. and continues the rest of the day, while play begins at 1 p.m. at Vista del Lago. The freshman championship game is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
