The Folsom Soccer Club Spartans are the State Cup Soccer Champions of the White Division.

The Spartans won the cup with a 2-0 win over the Lamorinda United Soccer Club FC 01 on Dec. 16

The under-11 boys’ team was playing in their first season at the competitive level and excelled, winning the second-to-highest league (after Premier) and state cup (Red is the highest).

The Spartans went 9-0 in league play, winning the division by 10 points. Folsom scored 46 goals and allowed eight.

In the team’s run to the state cup, Folsom won all nine playoff games, scoring 42 goals, while allowing only five. Prior to winning the cup, the Spartans defeated the FOSC American River Revolution 02, 5-0, in the semifinals and the Central Marin Arsenal 02 Red in the quarterfinals, 3-1.

“Our boys are very bright, "get it" young men that give me a high level of focus each practice,” said Coach Brigg Goodwin. “We have to practice smart and efficient with a focused set of building blocks. The majority of our team has been together for three years, so we have been able to work long term, building on each year with the same focus and adding just enough individual skill each year, with a focused emphasis on defense. These boys flat-out compete for every ball and work together as a team at a very mature level. I can't say that we always have the best players, but we can certainly out-hustle, play and in most cases out-smart other teams. These are smart, go-to-work type of boys. They certainly have earned everything they have achieved. I am so pleased for them. They have a lot to be proud of. This is their achievement.”

Members of the team include Owen Avdalovic, Nick Burgess, Nik Goodwin, Kevin Grewal, Connor Hayes, Tyson LaPord, Manning Lemoine, Jeremy Palomina, Carson Sear, Aidan Smith, Cole Tremain an Cameron Wall.

Brigg Goodwin coached the team with help from assistants Andrew Smith and Brian Flynton.
