Folsom High’s wrestling team came up one win shy of claiming the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I wrestling championship, but it was still a great week for the Bulldogs. The week started Wednesday with a 57-9 win over Sheldon to claim the Delta River League championship and ended Saturday with the team reaching the section finals for the first time before losing to Vacaville, 47-19. “Vacaville showed why they are a top-five team in the state,” Folsom coach Mike Collier said. “Overall, we had a great dual season, finishing 13-1, winning the Delta River league and reaching the DI section finals for the first time. We’re ranked tenth in the state right now and that’s the highest we’ve ever been so hopefully that’s a sign of more good things to come as we approach the postseason.” Folsom opened Saturday’s dual championships with a 44-18 win over Will C. Wood, before getting by Elk Grove in the semis, 42-27. Folsom won nine of the 14 matches, as Lorenzo De La Riva, Connor Pollock, Isaias Diaz, Ryan Jensen and Jordan Alleva won by pins, while Tony Hernandez, Nick Fiegener, Alex Hurlimann and Alex Wood picked up decisions. “We have been one win away from the finals many times before, so it was great to finally break through and get a chance to wrestle for the section title,” Collier said. In the finals against Vacaville, Folsom led 19-16 after eight matches with Pollock and Koshiyama picking up pins, Diaz earning a major decision and Devon Nooner winning by decision. The Bulldogs, however, didn’t win another match, losing four of the last six matches by pin in the 47-19 loss. Individually, Pollock had a great day with three pins. The only other wrestler to go undefeated and wrestle more than one match was Diaz. Folsom opened the week with the 57-9 win over Sheldon with wins coming from Carlos Alvarez, Tyler Hoffman, Roger Berton, De La Riva, Pollock, Hernandez, Koshiyama, Fiegener, Diaz and Wood. The junior varsity team also defeated Sheldon to finish the season with a perfect 16-0 dual season and league championship. Three female wrestlers from Folsom High competed in the Masters Tournament over the weekend. Shauna Martinez provided the top highlight, as she placed sixth in her weight class and was one win away from qualifying for the state tournament. Folsom plays host to the Delta River League championships on Saturday. The top-four finishers in each weight class advance to the Division I North Section Championships the following week. “Our first goal is to get all 14 weight classes qualified for the divisional,” Collier said. “Next, we want to win the tournament and break our team record of eight league champions in one year. This will not be easy, as we are in one of the toughest leagues in our section with Ponderosa and Oak Ridge having several contenders as well.”
