ROSEVILLE — Folsom High unveiled its latest prolific quarterback with a record-breaking night at Woodcreek on Friday.

Jake Browning threw for a Sac-Joaquin Section record 10 touchdowns and more than 600 yards as the sophomore led the Bulldogs to a 68-28 romp over the Timberwolves in both teams’ season opener. While several reports say that Browning tied a national record with 10 touchdown passes, according to an article found online, the Orlando Sentinel reported in an article last year that the national record is 11 touchdown passes.

Folsom senior Phillip Carter didn’t take long to live up to his playmaker label. He jumped on a Woodcreek fumble on the third play of the game. On the Bulldogs’ first snap, Browning threw a dart to Carter for a 20-yard TD. Carter added four more scores and 318 receiving yards.

“We came out just trying to play our game—start fast and keep up the pace,” Carter said. “I just took advantage of every opportunity I could. Jake lived up to our expectations, and more.”

Woodcreek quarterback Stephen Nogosek was impressive in his own right. He tossed four first-half touchdowns and 227 yards before the Folsom defense tightened up, shutting out the Timberwolves over the final 24 minutes. Folsom outscored Woodcreek 27-0 in the second half.

The Bulldogs limited Woodcreek running back Mitchell Layton to just 59 yards on 17 carries for the game.

“It was really a team win,” Folsom coach Kris Richardson said. “The defense adjusted and made the plays when we needed them.”

Browning, who played for Folsom’s freshman squad last season, was sensational in stepping in for record-setting QB Tanner Trosin, who is now playing at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.

“We had very high expectations for him, Richardson said of the 6-2, 170-pound Browning. “He’s something special. We ask for two things from our quarterback—anticipation and accuracy—and he has them both.”
