A young Folsom girls’ soccer team had its hands full against senior-rich host Ponderosa Tuesday afternoon.

Four freshmen were in the starting lineup against 12 seniors on Ponderosa’s roster – Tracy Raffetto, Izzie Lueken, Capri Green and Jess Brandt. The 2-0 loss occurred in the 34th and 44th minutes, where the Bruins benefitted from time and space in the box.

Goalkeeper Ashley Hallums was superb and tested regularly. Eight of her nine saves were in the first half.

Aside from seniors Hallums and Jamie Baker, the Bulldogs (0-4-0) are a young and injured team. Nearly halfway through league play, Brandt fits both categories. She recovered from a lateral collateral ligament tear earlier this season.

“We expected Ponderosa to be a good team and they were, but I think we just weren’t able to find feet,” said Brandt. She and the rest of the freshman quartet were in the starting lineup for the second consecutive game.

Still winless, Brandt said she expects the team to win at least one league game. The best chance will be at home against Pleasant Grove (0-2-2) on Thursday.

Folsom has lost its last four straight league matches, not including a tie against West Campus. Pleasant Grove tied two of its last three.

Ponderosa (1-2-1) had lost two of its last three before beating Folsom, leaving Folsom and Pleasant Grove to fight at the bottom.

Head Coach Johnn deGraef said his team played its best half of league in the first 40 minutes against Ponderosa. The Bulldogs took two shots, both on frame, and fought off four corner kicks and a pair of dangerous set pieces in the first 10 minutes.

Pleasant Grove plays at Folsom at 4 p.m. on Thursday.
