Folsom residents Curtis and Ashley Booth are in Miyazaki, Japan training for the Junior Olympic Judo competition to be held next month. The brother/sister combo competed in the California State Judo Championships on May 31-June 1 in Fresno and came home with medals, Curtis winning the gold in the Intermediate 1, 26-kilogram division, while Ashley placed second in the Bantam 3, 24-kilogram division. For Curtis, 10, the victory was sweet in that the third time proved to be the charm. After placing second the last two years to Robert Gomez, he came up through the consolation bracket and defeated Gomez twice to win the gold medal. As for Ashley, 6, she came home in second place in her first state judo competition. The two left for Japan on Thursday and will train at a judo school for a month before returning home. The USA Judo National Junior Olympic Championships will be held July 25-27 in Florida.
