The Folsom Riot, an under-16 girls select soccer team, took home the cup in the Elk Grove Sunstroke Classic held Aug. 9-10. The Riot won their first game Saturday against the Elk Grove Fury, 4-0, and then followed it up with a 5-0 victory in the afternoon against the Orangevale Rockets. On Sunday morning the Riot won their final preliminary game 3-0 against the Sonoma Excel, sending them to the championship game against the Elk Grove Pride. There the Riot defeated the Pride, 1-0, on a goal by Nicole Donato. Coaches Mike Cino and Jim Lehman were very proud of their girls. “Our offense was unstoppable with strong play by Donato, Taylor Camin, Joanna Turkiewicz, and Brianna Leiford,” Lehman said. “Our midfielders, Chelsea Cino, Danielle Keith, Ann Seibel and Milla Tiab, did a great job controlling the middle and getting the ball to our front end, while our defense did not allow a single score the entire weekend,” Cino said. “Goalie Victoria Odufuwa had some incredible stops and defenders Beth Balbierz, Catherine Lehman, Ashley Lemay and Hannah Lindner were so impressive even opposing coaches were complimenting them.” The girls noted that they couldn’t have done it without the support of their teammate, Jessica Reuter, who cheered them on from the sidelines due to an ankle injury suffered in the Folsom Cup Classic the previous weekend.
