The under-11 select Folsom Phenoms won the CYSA District VI Cup in Elk Grove on Dec. 7, defeating the tough Elk Grove Venom in penalty kicks. The Phenoms overcame quite a bit of adversity and still excelled this season. The team started with 13 players on the roster, but one moved to Germany and they were down to 12. Last month, the team’s highest scorer left the team and then the team’s second-highest scorer, Caroline Guthrie, broke her foot, but still played in a game the following day. That’s not all. With one goalie, Jenna Winger, out of town for Wednesday’s championship game, the other, Keara Columbo, who had been on crutches nursing a foot injury, still played in the championship game and made a big save in penalty kicks to help her team to victory. In league play this season, the Phenoms were undefeated with nine shutouts out of 10. They scored 26 goals and allowed only a single goal all season. Goalies Colombo and Winger, along with defensive players Elyse Nordheim, Devry Millett, Sydney Himmrich, Taylor Sorenson and Taylor Jeffrey led the way. Members of the team include Keara Columbo, Megan Nelson, Caroline Guthrie, Taylor Jeffrey, Elyse Nordheim, Devry Millet, Sydney Himmrich, Julia Norville, Taylor Sorensen, Sophie Moore and Jenna Winger. Dale Colombo, Dave Nelson and Grace Guthrie coach the team. Professional soccer player, Kat Brenneman, is their trainer.
