The 2009 tennis season came to an end with Folsom Park taking the SATA championship against Roseville’s Sierra View with a score of 2-1. The women’s 6.0 doubles team was formed from players taking classes from tennis pro Bryan Solem at Ed Mitchell Park. “The Sacramento Area Tennis Association’s award is a wonderful achievement for these ladies, as some have only been playing for a couple of years,” Solem said. Antonette Clark and Norma Thomson played at No. 1 and lost to Kerry Weinroth and Robby Denning 6-1, 6-1. Playing at No. 2,Sandy Kennedy and Beth Mergens defeated Sierra View’s Betsy Newington and Liz Adkins, 7-5, 6-2. At No. 3, Ellen Desvarro and Chris Volker won 6-0, 6-2 against Joyce Bray and Angelen Simao to secure the match. In their second to last game, Desvarro pulled her calf muscle and was unable to run, leaving little room for error to close the match for a win. Solem teaches both group and private lessons through the Folsom Parks & Recreation Department, ranging from beginning to advanced for both children and adults.
