In only their second season, Folsom Lake College’s golf team has qualified for the California Community College state championships. The Falcons earned the fourth and final qualifying spot at Monday’s NorCal Golf Championships at Diablo Grande Golf Club in Patterson. Folsom shot a 787, finishing 10 strokes in front of Cabrillo to earn the final qualifying spot. Folsom shot a 396 in the first round but improved by five strokes in the afternoon round to qualify. Things didn’t look too good for the Falcons early. After the first round they sat in seventh place and No. 2 golfer Tom Crowther withdrew from the tournament with a sprained ankle. Folsom’s No. 1 player Cole Zarecky struggled in with an 83 in the second round to make the outlook dim. The remaining golfers, however, stepped up in a big way. Luke Ivazian shot a 78, followed by rounds of 76 by James Millward and Steve Mesich, while Jake Kroeker came in with a 78. “That was an example of the true definition of team,” stated coach Barry Zarecky, when asked how they managed such an amazing comeback.
