The Folsom Lake College men’s golf team opened Big 8 Conference play Tuesday with a first-place team finish at Stockton Country Club. The Falcons shot a team score 375, beating defending conference champion Santa Rosa by seven strokes. Joel Slak was the tournament low medalist with a 1-under-par round of 70. Luke Ivasian and Cole Zarecky also played well shooting 73 and 74, respectively. Kevin Rose and Tanner Lichty shot 79s, while Riley Svikhart finished his round in 86 strokes. “I’m very pleased with the way the boys played,” said coach Barry Zarecky. “They’re coming together at the right time.” The golfers will play a non-league match on Thursday at Rancho Murieta (north course). The tennis teams took on Shasta College in Redding with a couple of short-handed squads. The women are still plagued by injuries, while the men were hampered by class conflicts. For the women, Rozy Saini won her match at No. 3 singles, 6-0, 6-1, and Kristina Bodeman and Maricela Medina won their No. 1 doubles match 8-2. It wasn’t enough, however, as the team lost 7-2 to the Knights. The men’s team could only manage one individual win in their 8-1 loss to Shasta. Chowsaii Vang won at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 5-7, 10-4. Phillip Wingett lost a tough three-set match 3-6, 6-2, 10-3 while playing at No. 1 singles for the first time. The tennis teams host district-rival American River College on Friday at Broadstone Racquet Club at 1 p.m.
