Folsom Lake College golfers open season at Stanford; tennis team travels to Hayward
The Folsom Lake College spring sports season gets under way this week for both men’s golf and men’s tennis teams.
The Falcon golf team opened the season at the Stanford Invitational Monday in a tournament that will also double as Big 8 Tournament No. 1. The Falcon tennis team travels to Hayward today to take on Chabot College in a non-conference match.
The golf team features two returning players: Tom Crowther, who was a member of the 2011 team that qualified for the state tournament, and Joel Slak, who played on the 2012 team and competed in the state tournament as an individual. The rest of the travelling team is made up of freshmen Dylan Neal, Brad Piel, Jace Tiller and Jordan Sato-Sterni. Also on the roster but not qualifying in the top-six for Monday’s tournament are freshmen Travis Anderson, Curtis McKenzie and Kyle Nelson.
The tennis team also returns two players from 2012: Kurt Marpuri and Mark Quimbo. Freshmen Matt Arana, Jorge Ispiritu, Preston FaGalde, Argisht Gevorgyan, Mong Vue and Craig Wheeler round out the squad. The team will also have their “home” opener at 1 p.m. Friday against Modesto Jr. College at their new home, Rollingwood Racquet Club in Orangevale/Fair Oaks (9373 Winding Oak Drive, Fair Oaks).
There was not enough interest this year to field a women’s tennis team. The school hopes next year to have a women’s team again.
