The Folsom lacrosse Falcon and Hawk youth teams won their season openers, while the varsity and junior varsity teams struggled in the season-opening games Feb. 27. The varsity squad lost to Chico, 7-2, as penalties creating man-down situations the last two periods of play did them in. Despite nine saves by goalie Zach Grossfeld and tough defense by Blake Overholt, Chico was too much for a Folsom United team already plagued by injuries. Mitch Barboza and Chris Widder scored for the team. The junior varsity team dropped a 5-0 decision to Chico, as most of the first two periods were played in their defensive end. Goalie Nick Antunes fought hard with eight saves. Newcomers on attack, Jericho Hallare, Troy Walker and Matt Kendrick attempted seven shots in the last two periods. The under-15 Hawks earned a 7-2 win over Fair Oaks, but lost 9-3 to Yuba City. Jeremy Sommer scored three goals in the win and added another in the loss. Max Merchant scored one goal in both games. Tim Bonnington scored twice against Fair Oaks, as Dean Wightman and Hunter Holden also added goals. Bradley Winkleman made seven saves, while Collin Whitney played strong defense. The under-13 Falcons pounded the Davis Knights, 12-2. Several players contributed to the win, but Matt Holden had three saves as goalie and later scored twice in the fourth period when he went in at offense. Hunter Jorgensen scored two goals, added an assist and a save as goalie. Bradford Petchauer scored two goals and added an assist. All four teams also play on Saturday with the varsity and junior varsity playing Casa Grande in Petaluma, the Hawks meeting up with the Granite Bay Grizzlies and the Falcons playing the Sierra Eagles in Loomis. The varsity United team, as well as the junior varsity team, plays at home Sunday against the Redding Red Hawks.
