Folsom High's Reyes-Small wins girls' cadet freestyle state wrestling titleBy: Staff Report
Folsom High freshman Nonie Reyes-Small won the cadet freestyle state wrestling title in the girls’ 132-pound division at the state tournament held over the weekend in Fresno.
Reyes-Small defeated all three of her opponents on her way to the title, and she also qualified for the cadet freestyle national tournament this summer in Fargo, ND.
Reyes-Small will be joined at nationals by Carlos Alvarez, who qualified by placing third in the cadet 113-pound boys’ division. Alvarez won six of his seven matches, defeating familiar opponents along the way, including Oak Ridge’s Josh Ploke and Vista del Lago’s Dalton Boyer, who went on to place seventh.
Jason Bergquist (138) and Connor Friery (145) also competed in the tournament, but did not place.
Folsom had six wrestlers compete in the Greco-Roman Tournament and five came back with medals. Angelo Martinoni won the schoolboy 84-pound division, defeating all four of his opponents. David Lopez placed second in the novice 80-pound division, while Peter Herrera did the same in the novice 130-pound division.
Jeff Skyrud placed seventh in the schoolboy 120-pound division, while Riley Lewellan placed eighth in the schoolboy 112-pound class. All placewinners qualified for Western Regionals to be held in Idaho in June.
Josh Elder competed in the schoolboy 91-pound division, but did not place.
