Nick Fiegener earned a silver medal and three other Folsom High wrestlers brought home some hardware from the Lou Encalada Invitational held Saturday at Rodriguez High School. Fiegener, making his first appearances in the finals as a freshman, dropped his final match against a much more experienced senior. Alex Hurlimann (171) and Alex Wood (189) both placed fourth, while Ryan Jensen (145) placed fifth. At the junior varsity level, Logan Cunningham (112) and Eric Helm (119) placed second in a tournament held at Del Oro High. Austin Badger placed third at 189, while his brother, Justin, placed fourth. Kyle Parrott defeated teammate Matt Mitchell in the consolation finals at 130 pounds, as Parrott placed third and Mitchell ended up fourth. Folsom’s final home dual match of the season is tonight against Jesuit, JV at 6 p.m. and varsity at 7 p.m. The team will recognize its seniors. Boys basketball Folsom (2-3, 10-11) split two league matches last week, defeating Ponderosa on Jan. 26, 73-52, while losing to Jesuit on Friday, 56-46. Folsom led the Marauders on Friday after the first quarter, 12-7, but by halftime trailed by nine. The Bulldogs came out fighting in the third quarter, as a 13-4 run tied the score at 36, before the Marauders outscored them 20-10 the rest of the way. “I thought our kids played hard and certainly didn’t give up when we fell behind,” Folsom coach Frank Horwath said. “Jesuit is a quality team and they played a tough preseason schedule so they’ve been ready for a tough league. Coming back from a lot of guys being sick and injured, I thought we played tough.” Girls basketball The girls struggled last week, suffering a 66-44 loss to Ponderosa on Jan. 25 followed by a 75-29 defeat at the hands of St. Francis on Friday. There’s no time to sulk, however, as the team’s next game is Friday at St. Francis.
