Folsom High to send five wrestlers to nationals in VirginiaBy: Staff Report
Folsom High is sending five of its top wrestlers to the National High School Coaches Association National High School Wrestling Championships in Virginia Beach, Va.
Jason Bergquist will compete in the freshman division; Mason Koshiyama, Carlos Alvarez, and state placer Lorenzo De La Riva will compete in the sophomore division at Nationals, while state finalist Nicholas Fiegener will wrestle in the junior nationals. All five wrestlers will be trying to place in the top-8 for their weight class to become an All-American.
Three of the five are returning All-Americans, while the other two will be competing at this tournament for the first time. Fiegener was able to accomplish that feat the last two years, finishing seventh in the country both times. Koshiyama reached the finals last year as a freshman while De La Riva finished fourth in the freshman division.
Alvarez will be making the trip to Virginia for the first time, but he does have national experience already, as he wrestled in the Freestyle and Greco-Roman nationals in Fargo, ND last summer along with Fiegener.
Bergquist will also be competing at the NHSCA Nationals for the first time, but will be looking to build off of his freshman state title he won a couple of weeks ago.
“This is a great experience for the wrestlers, but it can be very costly,” Folsom coach Mike Collier said. “We believe in seeking out the best competition in the area, the state, and in this case the country. It will be a trip they will never forget, but they could use help financially. If anyone is interested in becoming a sponsor for these young men, the kids and families would be very appreciative.”
Anyone interested in donating or sponsoring one or all of the wrestlers can contact Collier at email@example.com or call at (530) 867-1910.
“Any help would be great and no amount is too small,” Collier said. “We will be departing for Virginia on April 2.”
