The El Dorado Legion Post 119 under-19 baseball team has a distinct Folsom flavor to it. Though based out of Placerville, the team features six players who played on Vista del Lago’s varsity team this spring. These six players, Brandon Flynton, Jeff Miller, Shane Murphy, Dan Muzzi, Landis Provencial and David Landuk, have helped the team to great success this season. The team participated in the state tournament over the weekend in Yountville, and also claimed the District 7 championship followed by the Area 1 title on July 18. The team entered the state tournament with a record of 26-7. Flynton is the team’s starting third baseman and also pitches. Miller is always in the lineup, either as a designated hitter or playing shortstop or third base when Flynton is pitching. Murphy plays first and third base and Landuk is a catcher, while Muzzi and Provencial are two of the team’s top pitchers. Oak Ridge graduate Jeff McKenzie is the team’s top pitcher, while another Oak Ridge player, Tommy Massa, is the team’s starting center fielder. In the district championship game, Provencial pitched a complete game and earned the win, while Flynton pitched all nine innings during the 4-1 win over Chico in the Area 1 title game. Flynton is also one of the team’s top hitters, according to coach Rusty McDonald. The team also has players from El Dorado and Ponderosa high schools. “This is the first time we’ve ever made it this far (to the state tournament),” McDonald said of his team. “We’re one of six teams in the tournament and I think we have a chance to do well.” El Dorado won it’s opening game of the state tournament on Saturday, defeating Merced, 16-4.
