Fire scorches 10 acres in Folsom

-A +A
A two-alarm grass fire destroyed more than 10 acres of grassland and briefly threatened an adjacent power substation and storage facility before being controlled by firefighters from three agencies just before noon on Saturday. Firefighters requested additional resources to protect nearby homes in the area, but the forward rate of spread for the fire was stopped prior to endangering the homes, according to a press release. The fire was controlled by firefighters in approximately one hour. Crews encountered difficulty in controlling the fire due to the fire being directly underneath power lines owned and operated by both PG&E and SMUD, according to the release. Metro Copter 1 responded to the fire and assisted the incident commander in serving as an aerial observer. High temperatures, low humidity and a north wind estimated at 5-10 mph contributed to rapid fire spread in the grass, officials said. Investigators have determined that the cause was incendiary and are following up on several leads. Anyone with information about the fire is encouraged to contact the Folsom Police Department or WE TIP at 1-800-47-ARSON. There were no reported injuries. Firefighters from El Dorado Hills and Sacramento Metro fire districts also responded. ~ Staff report
