Five Mad Dawg athletes competed at the state tournament in Fresno last weekend and four came back with state medals, including one state champion. Folsom High sophomore Nick Fiegener continued his stellar off-season by capturing the Cadet Freestyle State Championship at 152 pounds. This is Fiegener?s second state title, having also won the California Freshman-Sophomore title in March. Fiegener went 6-0 on the weekend and was not scored on until his finals match, which he won in two close rounds over fellow CIF state qualifier John Leal of Chester. Taking second in the junior girls division was Mallory Velte, who had a close match in the finals at 130 pounds. By finishing in the top-three for their weight classes, Fiegener and Velte have now qualified for the Cadet/Junior Freestyle Nationals, which will be held later this summer in Fargo, North Dakota. Mad Dawg also had two younger wrestlers compete in the Schoolboy (middle school) Greco Roman division at state and both earned a state medal. Jason Bergquist ended up fourth at 120, while Jeff Skyrud was sixth at 105. Also competing in Fresno was Kyle Parrott, who wrestled in the 138-pound cadet division.
