Falcon golfers win Big 8 championship

The Folsom Lake College men’s golf team made history Tuesday by becoming the first Folsom Lake College team to earn a conference championship in any sport.

The Falcons concluded a season-long duel with Santa Rosa Junior College by defeating the Bear Cubs by four strokes at Chardonnay Golf Club.

The win capped a roller coaster season that saw the conference lead change hands seven times and was tied going into the final tournament.

The Falcons total score of 368 tied the school record set earlier this season (at Teal Bend, Feb 28). Sophomore Joel Slak and freshman Brad Peil led the Falcons with excellent rounds of 68 and 69, respectively. Also of note was freshman Jace Tiller’s hole-in-one on the 206-yard 12th hole, which allowed Tiller to play the back nine in two-under-par.

The victory was sweet revenge for Coach Barry Zarecky. In 2011, he had his team in the same position (tied for the lead with Santa Rosa) with one match to play. Santa Rosa won that match by five strokes to take the title. Folsom Lake College had led by as much as nine points earlier that year; Santa Rosa had a five-point lead after six tournaments this year.
