Falcon golfers can’t capitalize on opportunity; take fifth at Whitney Oaks

The Folsom Lake College women’s golf team had a great chance Thursday to close in on fourth place in the Big 8 standings, but couldn’t quite get it done as they finished eight strokes behind Sierra at Big 8 Conference Tournament No. 10 in Rocklin. Lesley Winford led the Falcons, as her round 87 was the third lowest individual score of the day on the very tough Whitney Oaks Golf Club course. Kristin Daniels and Heather LaVergne followed with 97 and 98, as the only other Falcon golfers to break 100. The Falcons now trail Sierra by six points in the battle for fourth place with just two tournaments remaining. Folsom Lake will need two third-place finishes in those final tournaments to pass Sierra, but according to Coach Mark Hatala, “It is definitely possible. It should be an exciting finish to the season.” Sac City won the tournament with a 349, followed by Modesto (366), Delta (380), Sierra (404), Folsom Lake (412) and Butte (499). The team’s next tournament is Thursday at Bartley Cavanaugh Golf Course in south Sacramento.
