Falcon golf team stumbles at NorCal; two individuals qualify for stateBy: Staff Report
The Folsom Lake College men’s golf team, fresh off their first Big 8 Conference Championship, went into Monday’s NorCal Championship at Diablo Grande Golf Club with high hopes.
Needing a team finish in the top two in order to qualify for the state championship, the Falcons could do no better than fourth. The disappointing finish ended the season for all but two of the team’s players. Sophomores Tom Crowther and Joel Slak qualified for the state championship as individuals; Crowther shot 146 (72, 74) and Slak came in with a 148 (76, 72).
The Falcons finished the morning round in third place with a solid team score of 372, but trailed Big 8 rival Santa Rosa by just one stroke for second. Unfortunately, the afternoon round was not kind to the Falcons, as three players shot in the 80s and the team finished with a 388.
“It’s a shame to finish the way we did; we had a great chance but played poorly in the afternoon,” said Coach Barry Zarecky. “I’m so proud of this team, winning our first Big 8 Championship last week. It just hurts to finish this way.”
