Vista del Lago’s varsity soccer team will be hard pressed to turn in a repeat performance from last year. The Eagles won all 12 games in the Sierra Valley Conference and went on to win the Division IV section title with a 2-0 win over East Union. The two-time defending champs won 18 of the 19 games they played last season with a 4-4 tie against Granite Bay as the only blemish on an otherwise perfect season. With an entire team of seniors graduated, Vista has plenty of holes to fill and another unbeaten season is unlikely. The Eagles, however, are not devoid of talent. Eight players return, including backs Michael LePage and Danny Jacobs, midfielder Matthew Raymond and forward Alex Ford. Another key player from last year, Nick Michaels, is currently injured, having suffered a broken ankle a few months ago, and it’s unknown if and when he will return. Other returning players include Brandon Lee, Cody Sherfy and Hunter Symon. Newcomers to the team are Hunter Ales, Parker Boyea, Colin Cook, Logan Dearborn, Will Dubay, Caleb Fields, Jarrett Giordano, Christian Layton, Austin Moen, Zac Morgan, Bobby Schnetz, Jake Smith, P.J. Sullivan and Brent Zavada. “We lost 11 players from last year, most of which were starters,” Vista coach Joe Esfandiary said. “We’re rebuilding and practicing hard. What the future holds, I cannot see. I think we should still do well, but I’m not sure how far we will go. I’m hoping for the best. With hard work, a lot of practice and good attitudes, I think we should do well.”
